Israel-Hamas tangled up in Ivy League identity politics row
The war in Gaza has exposed the splits within Western societies between those who believe in critical theory and those who still believe in the egalitarian genius of liberal democracy.
It was instructive to watch the three Ivy League presidents handle a straightforward question from a member of the US Congress: do you regard calling for the genocide of Jews as a violation of the university’s harassment rules?
That’s a pretty straightforward question. Each of the presidents replied that it “depended on the context”. Calling for the genocide of Jews depends on the context? I wondered if calling for all African to be sent to Africa would “depend on the context”? Or would calling for the genocide of Native Americans “depend on the context”?
