Why Europe must wean itself off Russian gas
Europe’s dependency on Russia’s gas is acute. The Ukrainian war will change that, but it will take many years.
Grant WilsonContributorOn December 21, the physical flow of natural gas in the Yamal-Europe pipeline reversed its typical westward direction, flowing instead from Germany to Poland.
The pipeline starts in Siberia, transits through Belarus, and is about 4100 kilometres long. It is owned by Gazprom, which holds monopoly rights on Russia’s exports of natural gas.
