On December 21, the physical flow of natural gas in the Yamal-Europe pipeline reversed its typical westward direction, flowing instead from Germany to Poland.

The pipeline starts in Siberia, transits through Belarus, and is about 4100 kilometres long. It is owned by Gazprom, which holds monopoly rights on Russia’s exports of natural gas.
