Piraeus served as the port for ancient Athens. Today it is the largest seaport in Greece. Since 2009, majority control of the port has been held by the China Ocean Shipping Company.

And in Europe this week, a senior government strategist was using Piraeus as an example of why European governments have become increasingly alarmed about both Chinese investment in critical infrastructure, and China's Belt and Road Initiative.
