Inspiration drawn from a bit of classic Bob Hawke blunt speaking has set Australia’s Olympic men’s rugby sevens team onto a path their counterparts in the full-team sport could only dream about at the moment: a podium finish on the world stage.
“Go and smash the bastards,” it was suggested to the team, in a slide presentation during a motivational visit from America’s Cup hero John Bertrand to a training camp earlier this year.
