Silly music and serious politics? Or vice versa?
Europe's kitschy karaoke-fest reaches its climax this weekend. But are there geopolitical undercurrents swirling beneath the surface of self-parody? Hans van Leeuwen weighs up the evidence.

These were the words of English broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan in 2008, as he signed off his 37th and final year as the BBC (and SBS) commentator on the annual kitsch-fest that shamelessly exposes Europe in all its contradictory glory.
