Humza Yousaf resigned as Scotland’s first minister and ruling Scottish National Party (SNP) leader after just over a year in office, a move designed to fend off attempts to bring down the government but one that is still likely to have a profound impact on UK politics.
“Repairing our relationship across the political divide can only be done with someone else at the helm,” Mr Yousaf, who replaced long-time leader Nicola Sturgeon in March last year, said at his official residence in Edinburgh on Monday night (AEST).
