Poison, planes and Putin: Abramovich’s race to save a fortune and stop the war
Since Ukraine was invaded, Russian oligarch and owner of the Chelsea football club Roman Abramovich has been rushing to salvage his assets while conducting back-channel peace talks.
Riga/London | As Russian tanks streamed over Ukraine’s borders in the early hours of February 24, Vladimir Putin summoned the country’s leading oligarchs to a meeting at the Kremlin.
At the time, Roman Abramovich was staying in the south of France where he owns Château de la Croë, a large villa with eight hectares of grounds on the seafront in Antibes. He rushed to Moscow on his private plane but arrived too late for the audience, which was partly televised.
