London | Former UK prime minister Boris Johnson mounted an extraordinary defence of the “partygate” saga, saying drinks parties at 10 Downing Street during COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns were “essential”.
Fighting to save his political career, Mr Johnson told a parliamentary committee on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT) that because it was “necessary” and “important” to hold farewell parties for departing colleagues, he and his staff had adhered to the lockdown guidelines.
