London | The energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has forced the world’s seven largest advanced economies to dial down their climate ambitions, accepting their dependence on gas and the role it will play in the transition to cleaner energy.

As Russia’s gradual tightening of the gas taps into Europe has driven up prices and raised the prospect of a potentially catastrophic winter, G7 leaders had to abandon earlier plans for their annual summit to ratchet up their climate goals another notch.
