Once the mutinous murmurs began, it took the Conservative Party nearly a year to eject Theresa May. It took about six months to discard Boris Johnson. Liz Truss? Six and a half weeks. She barely got her feet under the desk.

British politics has the feel of a runaway train. The tempo is breakneck, the volume is permanently shrill, and the only stations seem to be panic, action, then panic again.
