London | Former chancellor Rishi Sunak emerged on Friday as the early frontrunner to become the next British prime minister, after Liz Truss quit, ending a 45-day premiership that collapsed into chaos at breathtaking speed.
The Conservative Party will now conduct a breakneck leadership election, which will conclude by October 28 at the latest. Ms Truss will remain in Downing Street as caretaker PM until a new leader is chosen.
