Why China’s economic growth machine is on shaky ground

After an initial post-pandemic bounce back, China’s recovery is faltering. Economists warn the slowdown could be permanent as leader Xi Jinping prioritises national security.

Tokyo | Jamie Dimon, the JPMorgan chairman, had some unusually frank things to say about his hosts when he attended a conference in Shanghai this week.

In an interview during the trip, Dimon called China’s soaring youth unemployment figures “scary”, said the Chinese government was responsible for the uncertainty hurting investor confidence, and highlighted growing fears about US-China tensions.
