Virus exposes winners and losers in regional fight for investment

Indonesia is at a turning point. If it manages to get infection numbers under control, it can get back to business and enact the reforms that would make it more attractive for multinationals. If not, it could face a period as turbulent as any since independence 75 years ago.

Jakarta/Sydney | Vietnam looks set to pick up more foreign investment, while Indonesia risks chasing it away, as multinational diversification away from China exposes winners and losers across south-east Asia.

Investors are looking for cheaper labour costs and relief from US-China superpower rivalry. But red tape and other disincentives also play a huge role in the hunt for new links in global supply chains.
