Shanghai | The message went out at 2am local time on Thursday. In an unprecedented move, the Chinese government had decided to effectively quarantine one of the county's biggest cities to stop the spread of a deadly virus.

Airports, trains, buses and ferries would be suspended from 10am that day. For anyone awake in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, they had eight hours to try and get out of the city of 11 million people.
