Turning 60 feels like 40 in Japan’s certain age crisis

Japan’s ageing population means you’re still young at 60. That’s great if you’ve just celebrated that birthday. For the country, it’s a problem.

In Japan, turning 60 is a big thing. It even has a special name: kanreki. A 60-year-old has experienced the Chinese zodiac cycle five times and that places them back at the original birth zodiac.

Therefore, turning 60 in Japan is seen as your chance to start over again, which is the idea I embraced as I celebrated the big six zero last week. Being 60 in Japan might just be the best thing after all.
