Singapore loses its sheen as its first family fights over legacy

Lee Kuan Yew united Singapore, but his death sparked a spectacular unravelling of his family that has left Singaporeans divided.

Singapore spent all of 2023 working on ways to celebrate the centenary of the birth of its revered founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew.

Trees were planted, scholarships launched, and commemorative coins minted to honour what one government minister described as Lee’s “strategic vision and boldness to transform Singapore from a regional port to a global hub”.
