Nauru cuts diplomatic ties with Taiwan, switches allegiance to China

Taipei | Pacific island nation Nauru has decided to sever ties with Taiwan and switch diplomatic allegiances to China, in a blow to Taipei just days after electing a new president whom Beijing regards as a troublemaker.
Nauru, which has close ties with Australia, announced the surprise move in a statement on Monday, hailing it as a “significant first step in moving forward with Nauru’s development”.
