Tense Taiwan status quo as voters defy China

Taipei | Taiwan is entering an era of political instability that is expected to add to US-China tensions after the island nation elected a new president regarded as a troublemaker by Beijing, but failed to deliver him a parliamentary majority.

China said its determination to take control of Taiwan remained “as firm as rock” after voters backed William Lai Ching-te as leader, giving his Democratic People’s Party a third successive presidency, something no party had achieved in Taiwan.
