Australia joins global condemnation of Myanmar generals

Australia on Monday joined global condemnation of Myanmar’s generals for a coup against the democratically elected government, echoing calls for the immediate release of leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and other political and civilian figures.

Military chiefs declared a year-long state of emergency and installed Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing, alleging “election fraud” after Ms Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy’s convincing win at the country’s November poll.
