‘It took me longer to write Soeharto’s story than for him to live it’
David Jenkins has just released the first of three volumes on the former Indonesian president. He talks about playing golf with the dictator, and being blacklisted for a decade.
David Jenkins is waiting outside Sydney’s Rose Bay police station, shading his eyes from the blazing sunshine with a floppy hat. He is neatly dressed in checked shirt, V-necked jumper and pants, all in varying shades of blue.
He looks with relief and purpose at my footwear. “You’re wearing sensible shoes!” He then phones his partner, Justine, who has just dropped him off and asks her to swing back past, so he can change into a pair of sneakers he has in the car.
