Detained writer has ‘faint hope’ for justice ahead of China trial

Australian writer Yang Hengjun says his health has deteriorated but his spirits remain high after more than two years in a Chinese prison where he has refused to confess to charges of espionage ahead of his trial on Thursday.

In an emotional letter dictated to a visitor in March, Dr Yang said he still held out hope for a fair trial but urged supporters to explain his work to people in China if “the worst comes to the worst”.
