Australian facing trial in China a ‘political hostage’, supporters say
An Australian writer facing trial in Beijing for espionage this week is being used as a “political hostage” to pressure the Morrison government to back down from its criticism of China, his supporters say.
Yang Hengjun, an Australian citizen, faces three years to life in prison if a Beijing court finds him guilty, an outcome his supporters fear is likely given the 99 per cent conviction rate of China’s courts. His trial will be held in Beijing on Thursday.
