Tokyo/Canberra | China’s population has fallen for the first time in more than 60 years as plunging birthrates threaten its status as the world’s most populous country, which will have long-term implications for the global economy.

China’s latest population data released on Tuesday confirmed the country faced a demographic crisis after deaths outstripped births last year for the first time since the country was ravaged by famine under Mao Zedong’s rule in the 1960s.
