China hits back at Trump with 34pc tariffs, targeting goods crucial to US

Tokyo | Beijing has retaliated swiftly against the Trump administration’s new tariff regime, announcing a 34 per cent levy on all US imports from next Thursday, just a day after the latest wave of US trade taxes kick in.

As global markets went into freefall, President Donald Trump shot back on his social media website Truth Social saying: “China played it wrong, they panicked – the one thing they cannot afford to do!”
