Yang Hengjun, the Australian man detained in China, is being held for "endangering state security", Beijing said on Thursday night, as business figures raised the alarm about travelling to the mainland.
In its first public comments on the case, China's Foreign Ministry confirmed Mr Yang was being detained, saying it was a criminal matter and "enforcement measures" had been taken in order to conduct the investigation.
