Shanghai | China's internet slowed to a crawl shortly after midnight on Monday as tens of millions of people simultaneously picked up their smartphones to shop online.

Bargain-hungry consumers, many huddled in bed, began ratcheting up billions of dollars of purchases in the early hours of the morning.
