It’s not easy to hide in the basement of the White House, but Colin Carter was determined to try.

A few hours earlier, the 27-year-old student from Perth had been part of a 100,000-strong group who marched on Washington to protest the killing of four students during a Vietnam War protest at Ohio’s Kent State University five days earlier on May 4, 1970.
