Lowitja O’Donoghue, ‘the greatest Aboriginal leader’

Lowitja O’Donoghue was a trailblazer for Indigenous women. “There is a generation of girls who flourished because of her. I am one of those women,” says Voice architect Megan Davis.

Lowitja O’Donoghue, the trailblazing Indigenous leader and senior bureaucrat, is being celebrated as a giant of modern Australia after her death at the weekend.

Dr O’Donoghue, 91, lived the tragedy of the Stolen Generations, but became a nurse and social worker who rose to be the inaugural chair of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC).
