Emma Johnston takes the reins at Melbourne Uni in a time of crisis

The first female vice chancellor’s challenge is to get the university back in the black and lift the student experience.

When Professor Emma Johnston stepped onto campus at the beginning of the year as the first female vice chancellor of the 172-year-old University of Melbourne, it took her full circle.

The world-renowned marine biologist studied science there in the 1990s, signing up for clubs that took her fancy and cutting her teeth in student politics.
