As term one of school gets under way in NSW, more than 50 boys have been removed from Sydney’s Newington College after it announced it will transition to coeducation from next year. But almost 1000 girls have applied to enrol, the school has revealed, with an additional uptick in boys looking to attend a coeducational school.
In his first public comments since the controversial move was announced in November 2023, Newington chairman Tony McDonald said he “totally respected” some parents’ decision to withdraw sons from the school, founded 162 years ago by the progressive Uniting Church.
