The severity of the COVID-19 pandemic has lead to awards for three universities for programs responding to the protection of health workers, teaching by lockdown-affected academics and the mental well being of students.

Among winners in The Australian Financial Review Higher Education Awards 2020, Wollongong University's Preparing to Teach Online and University of Newcastle COVID-19 Equipment Shortages, are direct consequences of the fast-spreading disease.
