Genevieve Bell, an anthropologist, futurist and internationally recognised intellectual, will take over from Nobel laureate Brian Schmidt as vice chancellor of Australian National University.

In a message to students and staff, ANU chancellor Julie Bishop said Professor Bell would be the first woman to hold the position.
