The ‘motherhood penalty’: Becoming a mum slashes earnings by 55pc

Mums pay a “motherhood penalty” where their earnings fall by an average of 55 per cent in the first five years of parenthood, new Treasury analysis has found.
The research paper found that women’s earnings more than halve after the arrival of children, primarily because they take time out of the workforce or work fewer hours.
