Question: I’m single and bordering on retirement. My super is an SMSF that owns a property with a positively geared limited recourse borrowing and $165,000 in an industry fund balanced account that I wonder if I should rollover into my SMSF. I note the Australian Taxation Office has recommended property SMSFs employ a diversification strategy. I’m looking at refinancing the loan but wonder whether I should fix the interest rate?

I’m also interested in investing in gold and silver because I think now is probably a good time to do this. Is an exchange traded fund, like the EFT Securities Physical Gold Fund, the best way to do this as you don’t have to store the gold? Can I buy such ETFs myself within my SMSF or do I need to go through a broker? Helen.
