Australia’s biggest benefactors set philanthropy record

The Financial Review Philanthropy 50 list has notched up the biggest annual rise in value in its four-year history. However, next year might be a different story.

The amount of money given away by Australia's biggest philanthropists surged by one third in financial 2019 to $748 million, setting a record for the Financial Review Philanthropy 50 list.

"Normally overall giving in Australia rises in value between 5 and 6 per cent each year," says the list's compiler, John McLeod. "But this is a 35 per cent rise, the biggest annual jump we've seen from the largest givers. It's very impressive."
