Australia's 50 biggest givers

The value of the Financial Review Philanthropy 50 list 2017-18 has surged 21 per cent in one year. Here’s why.

Key Statistics

  • $553mtotal value of the Philanthropy 50 list.
  • 21%rise in value since the 2016/17 financial year.
  • $85.8mwas the biggest single donation in 2019 from the Paul Ramsay Foundation.
  • $3.6mwas the lowest donation on the Philanthropy 50 list.

To make it onto the Philanthropy 50 list in 2019, you need to have donated at least $3.6 million in the previous financial year, whereas $3 million would have got you there in 2017.

The list’s compiler, John McLeod, says it’s the most significant trend to have emerged from this year’s data. “The first list we did was boosted by a relatively large number of one-off bequests,” he says. “This year is more impressive because there were none. Donations were simply bigger.”
