Mechanics don’t set road rules, so techies must not define the AI world, we need people outside the bubble to understand what is happening and contribute to regulations.

Rapid-fire changes in AI make it hard for regular people to keep up. ChatGPT is in your kid’s pocket, AI voice clones can access government services like Centrelink, and the faces of women are being deepfaked into porn videos.

A sobering summary of what happens when commercial technology companies start racing to launch AI products, was published earlier this week, showing Snapchat’s willingness to experiment with AI on its young and vulnerable user base. It is shocking, but the truth is that generative AI technologies are here, and pausing their development is effectively impossible.
