Australia’s fire agencies are using artificial intelligence to help plan for successive bushfire seasons by analysing masses of data to decide when to back-burn and scouring satellite images to identify ignition points.

Rob James, the new managing director of data analytics platform Firestory, said one major Australian fire agency, which he declined to name, was implementing the firm’s software to help emergency services prevent and respond to bushfires.
