The ousted Australian OpenAI director Helen Toner, who was part of a failed push to sack the company’s chief executive Sam Altman, has declared the board was not trying to stymie the development of powerful AI systems.

Ms Toner, an artificial intelligence safety researcher with links to the effective altruism movement, broke her silence on Thursday (AEDT) when she formally resigned from the OpenAI board that she had sat on since 2021.
