There have been a few great bargains in the history of the tech industry.

In 2006, Google bought the start-up YouTube for $US1.65 billion. It now earns that amount back in just three weeks of YouTube advertising revenue. In 2012, Facebook bought the 13-employee start-up Instagram for $US1 billion, barely more than it now earns each week in Instagram income.
