German car maker Mercedes-Benz’s determination to roll out its direct-to-consumer agency model using Australian dealerships as showrooms was laid bare this week, as a $650 million compensation trial kicked off in the Federal Court in Melbourne.
Global players are closely watching the trial which is testing the strength of the Australian franchisee code, and asks whether franchisee contracts can be replaced and amended without compensation for their investment.
