Fungi and their mycelium “root” networks can break down and neutralise some of mankind’s most dangerous pollutants. Research has found that various edible species, including button, shitake and oyster mushrooms, can break down complex chemicals such as Agent Orange and plastic byproducts as well as capturing heavy metals (such as cadmium, which is used in batteries). Inedible fungi, such as white-rot, are also being effective.
