Australia can harness natural advantages to catch up in global AI race

Lack of investment and public distrust of the technology have left the country behind much of the world, but it doesn’t have to be like that.

Such is the tension between the world’s two largest economies in an age of Trump and tariffs that January’s launch of Chinese artificial intelligence platform DeepSeek was labelled a “Sputnik moment” in an echo of Cold War superpower rivalries.

US President Donald Trump called DeepSeek a “wake-up call” after the unheralded model stunningly matched or outperformed American generative large language market leader ChatGPT in reasoning, coding and mathematical tasks despite reportedly costing a fraction to develop and run.
