It is nearly six years now since venture capitalist Marc Andreessen declared that software was eating the world.

"We are in the middle of a dramatic and broad technological and economic shift," wrote Andreessen, in a seminal Wall Street Journal essay, "in which software companies are poised to take over large swathes of the economy".
