The Great Dividing Range runs the length of the continent, 3500 kilometres from Cape York down through NSW and into the bountiful plains of Victoria’s Western District. It comes to a magnificent conclusion with a couple of volcanic exclamations, Mount Sturgeon and Mount Abrupt, which tower over the pretty little town of Dunkeld.

A high-walled fort marks the point where the mountains succumb to the plains. The construction of this citadel’s wall was a gargantuan undertaking. Two metres high, and made of local sandstone, it took a team of masons 28 years to complete, longer than it took to build the Taj Mahal. You could squeeze the MCG within the walls.
