It was the recent discovery of our intrepid colleague Edmund Tadros, this newspaper’s professional services editor, that the Commonwealth’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency had inserted a new question in its employer survey for the 12 months ending March 31, 2021: “Did your organisation receive JobKeeper payments?”

With those chilling words, this bureaucratic backwater had inadvertently placed itself on the centre stage of political warfare.
