‘Unfairly vilified’: History rewritten for Tom Waterhouse

Sportsbet’s Barni Evans finds no place for personal blame as anger rises about gambling advertising.

It’s a sad fact that Sportsbet CEO Barni Evans is an offensively influential part of this country’s media and sporting landscapes. During his time running the largest online bookmaker, he’s helped jam gambling’s parasitic tentacles into every major sporting code and their major broadcasters.

Not that anyone is responsible for it. Evans was the keynote at an “innovation” in wagering compliance conference in Sydney on Wednesday. As part of it, he put up an “iconic” picture of Tom Waterhouse, the bookmaker who offended the country in 2013 by doing live betting odds by the pitch.
