No matter what happens on election day, the longest-serving parliamentarians in both the Senate and House of Representatives will, soon after Sunday May 22, retire.
Both have, one way or another, been pushed out by their respective parties’ more ascendent factions. But at least Labor’s Kim Carr (in the Senate) and the Liberal’s Kevin Andrews (in the House) have one thing such machinations can never take away from them. We speak, naturally, of their vintage parliamentary pensions.
