Why Sydneysiders are getting rid of their backyard pools
When retired engineer and management lecturer John Waters used to gaze out over his backyard from his deck, all he could see were the massive blue gum trees dropping leaves and twigs into his rapidly discolouring swimming pool.
Now he looks out and sighs with pleasure at the sight of the magnificent trees fringing a sweeping expanse of greenery. "I was a bit emotional at first about our decision to take out the pool as we put it in when we built the house 40 years ago," he says.
