Rising rents could be the sleeper factor for inflation
The opening of the international border, bringing a resumption in migration and the return of foreign students, could put a fresh spike into housing rents, which have already surged as much as 9 per cent nationally over the past year.
Regardless of whether the rate of rental growth eases from here or takes off again, analysts, economists and the Reserve Bank have warned that higher rents are yet to be fully captured within the Consumer Price Index.
